Sustainable Service Delivery is a Driver to Align and Integrate Efforts at a Watershed Scale

The Comox Valley is leading the way in demonstrating what can be accomplished by a regional team approach. Four local governments and the Comox Valley Land Trust are striving to work across boundaries; and walk the talk in applying the ‘4Cs’ – that is, communicate, cooperate, coordinate and collaborate.

Through a program of professional development, the Comox Valley Regional District and its three member municipalities (Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland) are aligning efforts, building leadership capacity and striving for a consistent Comox Valley regional approach to Sustainable Service Delivery. The Comox Valley experience is the featured article in the latest Asset Management BC Newsletter.

“We know that the time to shape future life-cycle costs is at the infrastructure planning ‘front-end’; and we recognize the importance of thinking at a watershed scale,” states Kevin Lorette, General Manager of the CVRD Property Services Branch.

“Protection of a community’s natural resources is an important piece in Sustainable Service Delivery, both fiscally and ecologically. Because nature has no borders, the four Comox Valley local governments are exploring how we can align and integrate our efforts at a watershed scale. We can achieve that outcome within the existing governance framework.”

The Comox Valley accomplishment will be showcased at the 2011 State of the Island Economic Summit in October. This flagship event of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance (VIEA) creates an opportunity to share the Comox Valley experience Island-wide. For more information, click here.
